The Most Frequently Asked Questions  (from the MS website)

PLEDGE INFORMATION

If I can’t participate, will I get reimbursed for my registration fee? Will I still be required to raise the minimum pledge?

Unfortunately, the registration fee is non-refundable.  You will not be required to raise the minimum pledge though.

What is the minimum amount I must raise to participate?

Each rider in the 2007 MS Bike to the Bay is responsible for turning in a minimum of $250 in donations. In 2006, our rider pledge average was $568 and many qualified for our Mission Possible Club, which entitled them to bike shop gift certificates, commemorative cycling jerseys, hotel rooms, and more!!!

Where does the money go?

Your pledges provide hope for the more than 1,350 Delawareans living with MS. Every mile that you ride and every dollar that you raise brings us closer to a cure for MS. Besides funding research, these funds support programs and services for those Delawareans living with MS. Some of the programs that your funds support are: MS Assessment Clinic, Support groups for clients and caregivers, Client Retreats, HomeAble, Education programs for the newly diagnosed and Respite care to name just a few.

Who sponsors me?

Anyone can sponsor you! Riders can sponsor themselves or ask co-workers, friends, neighbors, local businesses and family members. Many companies sponsor their employees; be sure to ask if your company offers a matching gift program. For fundraising tips or for more information contact Amy at 302-655-5610 ext. 24.

What do I need to do to receive my company’s matching gift?

First, check to see if your company has a matching gift program. If so, are there restrictions? Obtain and complete your company’s matching gift form (you can obtain a form from your Human Resources Department) and send (or email) it with your pledge money. Matching gift funds help you qualify for incentives!

Can I bring my contributions the day of the ride?

Absolutely!!! And, you can turn them in before and after the ride too.

Can I turn in my pledges in before the day of the ride?

Yes. You may mail or drop off your contributions. Our address is: Two Mill Road, Suite 106, Wilmington, DE 19806. Our office hours are: Monday through Friday 9am until 5pm.

How should my sponsors make out their checks?

“National MS Society” and include your name in the memo section.

What can I give my sponsors who want a receipt?

Thank you receipts are available on our website (www.msdelaware.org) under downloads.

For pledges over $100, we will send a receipt for tax purposes.

When is the deadline to turn in my pledges?

The pledge deadline is Wednesday, October 31, 2007.

When is the ranking of Top Fundraisers and Teams finalized?

The ranking for Top Fundraisers and Team is finalized by Saturday, February 1, 2008. Why so late? To allow time for matching gifts to be processed.

What if it rains during the bike ride?

Be prepared, rain or shine, warm or cold…the MS Bike to the Bay Ride will go on! Bring appropriate clothing because no matter what the weather is, we’ll ride! Mornings can be cool and as the day progresses, get warmer; so, dress accordingly.

In the event of severe weather (e.g., tornadoes or severe thunder and lightning), the MS Staff may temporarily stop the event by holding you at rest stops until the storm passes over, or may call the tour off for the day and provide transportation to the finish for those on the route. MS Officials will be in contact with the National Weather Service and base their decisions on information provided. We ask for your cooperation – your safety is our number one priority.

What time does the ride start?

On Saturday, the ride starts at 8:00 am. For riders who have not picked up the packets, or registered, registration opens at 6:30 am. On Sunday, the ride starts at 7:00 am.

Can my family follow me on the route?

No. To help ensure the safety of everyone involved, we ask that families and friends stay off the route. At the start line, we will have alternative directions to the rest stops.

How far apart are the rest stops?  What if I can’t make it to the finish?

The rest stops are placed every 10-12 miles along the route. They will be fully stocked with energizing snacks.  Sag vehicles will pick up tired riders and transport them to the next rest stop.  Keep in mind that on the first day, our sag vehicles rotate south to the beach.  On the second day, they rotate back north to Dover.

What if I have a problem with my bike along the route?

Don’t worry.   Support vans from Bike Line, Dunbar’s Cyclery, Henry’s Bikes and Wooden Wheels will be on the route, at the start and finish lines to provide assistance.

Is the ride 75 miles each way or 150 miles each way? Or is it 45 miles?

ALL OF THE ABOVE. The ride is 75 miles down to Rehoboth Beach and 75 miles back to Dover. For those participants who would prefer a shorter ride, you can begin the ride on Saturday at Lake Forest High School. This is approximately 45 miles from the Henlopen Hotel in Rehoboth Beach – our Saturday night finish line.

If you ride the shorter route on Saturday, registration begins at 10:30 am (at Lake Forest High School). This is to make sure that you are on the route by 11:00 am.

If I can only participate on Saturday, is there a shuttle that will take me back to DelTech, Terry Campus in Dover?

Yes, the MS Society is providing shuttles back to Dover on Saturday night. The cost will be $25 per person. You must reserve a spot by Friday, September 7th. Look for the form on our website, or in the newsletter—Inside the Ride – or online.

Are there shuttle Sunday morning?

Yes. Again, the MS Society provides shuttles back to Dover on Sunday morning. There is no cost for the shuttles on Sunday morning. Shuttles begin to depart (from the Henlopen Hotel) at 8:00 am. They continue until approximately 10:00 am.

Does the MS Society make any arrangements for riders who need accommodations overnight?

For $30, you may book a hotel room with the MS Society.  We place riders four to a room with two double beds.  On Saturday morning at DelTech, Terry Campus, we make the room assignments.  If you know who you want to room with, get in line together.

May my child ride?

Yes, but they must be accompanied by an adult at all times.  Any person under the age of 18 must also have their waiver signed by a parent or guardian.

How will my luggage get to the beach?

Drop it off at the luggage truck in the designated spot at DelTech, Terry Campus on Saturday morning.  Each rider will be given a luggage tag, with their rider number on it, at Registration.  We will deliver the luggage to your hotel.  If you are staying at a friend’s home or a hotel we don’t deliver to, your luggage will be dropped off at the finish line at Henlopen Hotel in Rehoboth Beach.  On Sunday morning, the luggage that was delivered to the hotels will be picked up.  Others may drop off their luggage at Henlopen Hotel. All luggage will then be taken back to DelTech, Terry Campus.

May my spouse and/or family join me, even if they’re not cycling?

Family and friends may join you at the finish line in Rehoboth Beach and DelTech, Terry Campus.  If they would like to join you for dinner on Saturday night, we do ask for a $10.00 donation for adults and $5.00 for children. On Sunday morning, your family can also eat breakfast. The requested donation for breakfast is $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for children.

Is food provided on the Tour?

Is there food? Yes. Many riders have even commented that they actually gain weight on the ride because of all the food. Lunch will be served at Milford Middle School, the half-way point, on both days.  Dinner will be served near the Henlopen Hotel area, which is located at the north end of the Boardwalk and across from Lake Gerar. The actual streets are Lake View and Grenoble Place. Bbreakfast, on Sunday morning, will be at the same location as Saturday’s dinner, and there is an all-day barbecue at the DelTech—Terry Campus Finish Line on Sunday.

Do I have to be on a team?  Whom do I contact if I decide to start my own team?

You do not have to be on a team, but it is fun to have people to ride with.  The encouragement and the camaraderie among team members can make the ride more enjoyable.  There are also special team prizes and incentives available.  Contact our TeamMS Coordinator, Toni Clark, at 302-655-5610 or toni.clarke@msdelaware.org, if you would like information about how to start a team.  You will receive a complete team captain’s kit with everything you’ll need to recruit team members, raise pledges and generate enthusiasm!

MS150 Bike to the Bay (Dover, DE to Rehoboth Beach, DE)

For the past 11 years I have participated in the National MS Society's annual MS150 Bike Tour to help raise funds for research and local programs. It's a small thing for me to do for people who face the devastating and relentless effects of MS every day. With each mile I ride, I hope to bring the National MS Society closer to a cure.  The 2007 ride is scheduled for Saturday, September 29 and Sunday, September 30th.

Multiple sclerosis affects lives every moment of every year. At any time, someone with MS may suddenly be unable to stand up, hug their child or see a friend across the room.

This is my second year as a co-captain of the Bank of America team.  If you are interested in participating in the Delaware MS150 Bike to the Bay this year, you can email me at
pmazzeo@todayfitness.net or click here to join Team Bank of America

Sponsor dollars are good too!  If you are able make a charitable donation by sponsoring me for the ride, we can reach our goals that much quicker!  Every dollar contributed will help us to end the devastating effects of MS, sooner rather than later.

Thanks for your support!
